I heard Gage crying a little hard and texted Kristi from the bedroom to see if Gage needed his mom. (If I am home and Kristi is here, I stay in my room and do homework so it isn't disruptive to the routine that Kristi and the boys have, plus if they know I am here, there is no hope for getting any peace/being productive). Anyway, she said, "maybe, because he burned his hand."
Apparently he climbed on a chair and placed his hand on the flat-top burner about 10 minutes after the mac and cheese had cooked.
Poor little guy was inconsolable after Tylenol and Ibuprofen and holding a go-gurt that was cold or running cold water on his hand. The only thing that helped him was re-wetting a green washcloth with cold water every 2 minutes. I called the pediatrician and she said that he needed to go to the ER because apparently burns on the palm can cause scarring and contractures of the hand. Eek.
OK, so we went to the ER. They gave him some Lortab and a cold compress under his cold, wet wash-cloth from home- he then settled in. At home, a couple of hours later, he was protective of his hand, but did not seem to be uncomfortable. Apparently when you get a burn it continues to burn down through all layers of the skin. Once it burns through as far as it is going to, then it stops hurting considerably.
He had 2nd degree burns on his finger-tips/pads and thumb, and first degree burns on his palm.
The next day we went to the Pediatrician office for follow-up (love our ped office... open on Saturdays). All looked good, and they wrapped it up to help prevent infection. The Coban wrap was blue, hence "blue hand", as he referred to it. He liked the ointment and having it covered for about 5 days. We wanted it redressed "blue hand!" and didn't bother it until after about 5 days.
It is totally healed now, and there are no problems..
He has been loving Mickey. He got a Goofy to help him feel better! |
